Item Information
- Title:
- Registrar of Students at Springfield College, 1891-1895
- Description:
-
The following 24 page document lists all of the names of people connected to the Young's Men Christian Association Training School, now Springfield College, from the years 1891-1895. All of the young men have signed their names on the document. It appears that most of these names represent students who attended the college, but there are also names of people who applied to the school and did not end up attending or were connected to the school in some other way. Two of the names on the document are James Naismith (the creator of Basketball) and William Morgan (the creator of Volleyball). Naismith's name is on the first page labeled 13, and is the sixth name listed from the top. William Morgan's name is listed on the page numbered 23, and he is about the twelfth name listed from the top. James A. Naismith (November 6, 1861 – November 28, 1939), known as "The Father of Basketball," was born in Almonte, Ontario. When he was nine, both of his parents died of typhoid fever and he was raised by his uncle, who later financed Naismith's way through college. He earned his theological degree from McGill University and graduated from Springfield College, then the YMCA Training School, in 1891. After graduation, he was hired as a faculty member, where he taught for five years. It is in his first year as a faculty member at Springfield College that he created the game of Basketball as an activity for an unruly class. In 1895, Naismith enrolled at the Gross Medical School in Denver and received his M.D. in 1898. In that same year, Naismith took the position of department head of physical education at the University of Kansas, where he remained until his death. For more information on William G. Morgan see https://springfield.as.atlas-sys.com/agents/people/723.
