Letter from Les Vipond to Springfield College Librarian regarding Sir George Williams wax cylinder recording
Description:
Letter written by Les Vipond, Associate General Secretary of the Canadian YMCA, to the Springfield College Librarian requesting information about the Sir George Williams recording of his address to the YMCA Training School Jubilee Class of 1894. In 1894 the YMCA celebrated its 50th anniversary and to commemorate the event the International YMCA Training School (now Springfield College) in Springfield, Massachusetts held a Jubilee Celebration. Sir George Williams was unable to attend the event so he wrote a letter to the Jubilee Class which he recorded on a wax cylinder at the Edison House in London. The cylinder was sent to the Training School where it was played at the Jubilee Celebration. The cylinder was re-recorded in 1937-1946 and most recently in 1964. This letter inquires as to the location and condition of the original cylinder.
