2017 digitization of the original recording of Sir George Williams Speech to the Jubilee Class of 1894
Description:
This is the 2017 digital file of the original recording of a speech by Sir George Williams recorded for the Jubilee Class of 1894 of Springfield College, then known as the International YMCA Training School. The digitization used an audio preservation technology known as "IRENE". IRENE uses a non-contact approach to Audio Preservation, creating ultra-high resolution images of the audio groove structures. The resulting image files are then processed through software that translates them into an audio file. The resulting file was audio engineered by Toby Mountain in 2017. This is one of two versions produced by Toby Mountain in an attempt to get as much clarity as possible. To hear the other version, see file ms509-01-13-007. The speech was recorded by George Williams on a wax cylinder at the Edison House in London, England and sent to Springfield College. It was played during the Jubilee celebrations held on June 6, 1894. To learn more about Sir George Williams, see: https://springfield.as.atlas-sys.com/agents/people/713. Audio technician at NEDCC wrote, "Extremely Low level audio recording of 5 microns-usually 20-50 microns for commercial cylinders."; The original files produced by the New England Document Conservation Center (NEDCC) using the IRENE Audio preservation technology are contained within the main digital archives. These include tiff, jpg, wav, mpg, and pri files. Only the files professionally mastered by Toby Mountain, ms509-01-13-006 & ms509-01-13-007, have been provided for the online use of researchers and general users. All files created by NEDCC were deemed too technical or did not have the clarity these files have, so it was decided that they would remain within the main digital collections. To talk about receiving access to these files, please contact the College Archivist in the Springfield College Archives and Special Collections.;
