A letter from Ralph L. Cheney to F.A. Hewson dated May 7, 1917. In the letter, Cheney apologizes to Mr. Hewson for the loss of his son, Charles D. Hewson, a Springfield College student. Cheney tells Hewson memories of his son and how he had a place in the hearts of many at Springfield. Ralph L. Cheney served as the head of Springfield College’s Secretarial Department from 1907 to 1924. Before taking this position, he worked as a YMCA secretary in Albany and Niagara Falls, New York. Charles D. Hewson was part of the Springfield Class of 1919. He did not graduate but left shortly after he arrived to join the Canadian troops in World War I - records show that he arrived in September 1915 and left in January 1916. He was killed in action on April 9, 1917, at the Battle of Vimy Ridge.
