Letter from D. Willard Lyon to Laurence L. Doggett (February 14, 1920)

A letter written by David Willard Lyon, the General YMCA Secretary of China, to Laurence L. Doggett, president of Springfield College concerning Shu Hong (舒鸿), or Thomas H. Suvoong as he was known as at Springfield College. The letter is dated February 14, 1920. In the letter Mr. Lyon introduces Mr. Shu to Dr. Doggett and recommends him for admissions to the college, telling him a bit about his past and family. The rest of the letter talks about his finances and what should happen if it turns out that he cannot go to Springfield College. Shu Hong (舒鸿), or Thomas H. Suvoong as he was known as at Springfield College, was born on August 23rd, 1895 in shanghai, Jiangsu province. He studied in the Shanghai YMCA high school, and then completed a year of preparatory in St. John’s University. After a year of service in France during World War II, he returned and joined Springfield College in 1920 through the recommendation of the International Committee of YMCA in New York.
