- Description:
-
This is a lecture on William G. Morgan, a Springfield College alumnus and the inventor of the game of volleyball. The presenter of the lecture is Springfield College Volleyball Coach Joel Dearing, who was introduced by Springfield College alumna and faculty member Dr. Mimi Murray. The lecture is mainly based on Joel Dearing's book "The Untold Story of William G. Morgan - Inventor of Volleyball". The lecture was part of a series of lectures that Dr. Mimi Murray put when she was Springfield College's Distinguished Professor of Humanics in 2008-2009. Joel Dearing earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education at Springfield College in 1979 and his master’s degree in physical education from Bridgewater State College in 1982. After graduating, he worked as the director of athletics at Roger Williams University, where he started the volleyball program. In 1989, Springfield College then hired Dearing as the head coach of the women’s volleyball team, a position he held until 2010. In 1990, he also became the head coach of the men’s volleyball team, a position he held until 1996. In 2011, Dearing became an associate professor of physical education at Springfield College. Regarded nationally as one of the sport’s best coaches, he ranks in the top ten in Division III history with a 697-305 (.695) overall mark during twenty-nine seasons. Dearing has conducted volleyball clinics in Aruba, Argentina, Bermuda, China, and Ireland. During the 1997-1998 academic year, Dearing served as the Springfield College Distinguished Professor of Humanics. In 2006, USA Volleyball, the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), and Molten USA recognized Dearing with the Trailblazer Award for his role in establishing the Men’s Invitational Volleyball Championship. A USAVB Level III accredited coach, Dearing serves as a member of the Volleyball Hall of Fame board of directors and the U.S. Coaching Accreditation Program Cadre.
