A photograph showing Edward M. Ryan and his family (his wife on the left side and his two children in the middle) posing for a photo, ca. 1911. Written on the back of the photograph is, "E.M Ryan + family / 1911 Mr Ryan is field service / secretary YMCA of / New England .". Edward M. Ryan (1878-1970) was born in Stretford, Manchester, England. He was a graduate of the class of 1911 He was known affectionatly as "The Major" by the fellows at the YMCA in Wellington New Zealand where he spent his time before and after his war service. He served in three wars in the British Army, the Boer War, World War I, and World War II. During the First World War he served as a Y.M.C.A. field secretary at Awapuni and Trentham camps in France; and in the Second World War he served as an officer of the Wellington Y.M.C.A., which gave shelter to thousands of troops. He died in 1970.
