This article titled, "How Game of Basketball Began" appeared in a 1947 edition of the Philadelphia Inquirer. The first part of the article explains how basketball was created by Dr. James Naismith. It also explains how the game had grown immensely and that conservative reports estimated that over 90 million people a year watched basketball games in 1947. The second part of the article focuses on how physical the game of basketball was in its early stages. One of the major reasons for this was the fact that fouls were not called as closely as they are today, meaning that players could get away with being extremely rough and not being penalized. In addition, the fans in attendance often made it very difficult for opposing teams, and would even jab players with hat pins or sticks if they came to close to the sideline.
