According to the caption and writing in the back the picture was taken somewhere in Maine in 1986. Dr. John Brainerd was a professor and head of the Biology Department at Springfield College. He specialized in ecological botany and conservation education, and he was active in many fields of conservation. He earned his PhD at Harvard University and was with the U.S. Forest Service and the U.S. Wildlife Service before coming to SC. He retired in 1980.
