A newspaper article titled, "Outdoor Sportsman's Guide" written by Buddy Marceau. It was published on August 27, 1963. The article talks about the Watershops Pond, or Lake Massasoit as it is known by the Springfield College community, and the proposal of allowing motorized boats of any size on the lake. In 1809, the Watershops Pond, known to the Springfield College community as Lake Massasoit, was formed by the army by damming the Mill River. The purpose of the dam was to ensure a constant flow of water downstream for the Springfield Armory “Watershops.” The Springfield Armory was America’s first and last National Armory, formed in 1777 and continuing production up until 1968. The formerly named Watershops Pond has 7 miles of shoreline and covers 186 acres. From 1892-1900, the buildings of Springfield College began to come about, and the name was changed to Lake Massasoit by Springfield College officials. The name came from a local hotel, the Massasoit House, owned by Marvin Chapin, a generous benefactor of the college. In 1920, the college purchased a large area of land on the upper end of the pond, and called it the “Freshman Camp.” Since the college was formed, students, faculty and visitors have used the Pond for sailing, swimming, ice skating and fishing. However, the lake was officially closed for swimming in 1984 when the lake was said to be unhealthy. THE SPRINGFIELD UNION, SPRINGFIELD, MASS., TUESDAY, AUGUST 27, 1963 Outdoor Sportsman's Guide By BUDDY MARCEAU At last week's meeting of the board of directors, officers, executive committee and commit-heads of the Springfield Chapter of Izaak Walton League of America, held at the home executive committee chairman Joseph D. Bates, Jr. in Long- meadow, it was yoted that the Chapter register opposition any permits for operation of any boats propelled by mechanical motor of any size on Watershops Pond in Springfield. It is the opinion of the Chapter that Watershops Pond is the last local waters where canoeists and rowboat operators can enjoy their sport without having dodge motor boats, water skiers, ete. Letters will be sent to the Springfield Parks Commission, eries and Game, the Mayor Springtield and ils Conservation Commission. Armory, the Division of Fish-tober Current Very Slow It is the opinion af those at the meeting that motorboat opera- tion on Watershops Pond would create an oil pollution problem. The current is very slow and oil spilled from the outboards would spread over the surface and find its way to the banks. This could cause a serious problem for the landowners who permit many youngsters to swim in the pond from their beaches. Operation motors on the pond also would create a noise problem for those who live along the banks. It feared that if motors are per- mitted on Watershops Pond that many property owners will close their lands to bathers and fisher-Prellwitz, men who are now permitted come and go as they choose A committee of five members of the Chapter has been named to meet with the three other |chapters of the League in Massachusetts at the call of the state director.
