This photograph shows three women holding Japanese paper lanterns. The woman on the left is Springfield College honorary degree recipient Liselotte Diem, the middle is Dr. Dorothy Ainsworth, and the right woman cannot be identified. The three of them are holding paper lanterns with the character "椿" on it, which means a kind of flower. The photograph was probably taken in Japan. Liselott Diem (1906-1992) is a German educator in Physical Education. She received an honorary Doctor of Humanics degree from Springfield College in 1967. Dorothy Sears Ainsworth served as the Director of Physical Education at Smith College from 1926 to 1960. She was actively involved in organizations interested in advancing the physical education of women. Dorothy S. Ainsworth died in 1976.
