- Description:
-
Springfield College published “Basketball Was Born Here,” a thirty-six page pamphlet describing the early history of the sport, in the fall of 1990. Basketball was invented by Dr. James Naismith in December 1891 while he was a faculty member at Springfield College. The pamphlet is the second in a series of four pamphlets that were created by Springfield College and the Basketball Hall of Fame and, with at least the last two, published by Springfield College. The pamphlet is divided into seven sections: “Basketball Was Born Here,” “Tribute to Dr. Edward S. Steitz,” “Basketball’s Original Rules,” “Evolution of the Rules,” “The Basketball Hall of Fame,” “Around the World,” and “Springfield College.” Joseph D. Bates, Jr., wrote the first section, which tells the story of how basketball was created, beginning with a meeting between Dean Luther Gulick and Dr. James Naismith. The section is almost unchanged from the original publication. It includes a picture of Naismith, the first basketball team, and an early diagram. Joe O’Brien, the executive director of the Basketball Hall of Fame, wrote the second section about the life and achievements of Dr. Edward S. Steitz (1920-1990), who was an original incorporator of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1959. He was the NCAA Rules Editor and Interpreter from 1968 until his death. The third section lists the original thirteen basketball rules. Springfield College alumnus Dennis Phillips (class of 1990) wrote the fourth section, which analyzes changes in the rules as well as the game's international reach. Halfway through this chapter are pictures of the original Basketball Hall of Fame, which was located at Springfield College from 1968 through 1985, as well as its next location in Springfield Center. It also contains a picture of Springfield College faculty member Peter V. Karpovich gathering physiological data from a student lifting weights. The fifth section, written by Jerry Healy, briefly describes the history of the Basketball Hall of Fame as well as their exhibits. The sixth section, “Around the World,” briefly describes the international spread of basketball. The final section provides a brief description of Springfield College's athletic and academic programs. For biographical information on Edward S. Steitz, see: https://springfield.as.atlas-sys.com/agents/people/110.
