This video shows a lecture titled “An Antidote to Sexist Media Culture” by Dr. Donna A. Lopiano from Springfield College’s Symposium on Girls and Women in Sports. The symposium was held in conjunction with the celebration of fifty years of women’s varsity athletics at Springfield College and was held during homecoming weekend (October 25-26, 2013). The video opens with Cathie Schweitzer presenting the closing keynote speaker, Donna A. Lopiano. Dr. Lopiano’s talk explores the messages that media culture sends to women and the importance of sport participation in counteracting objectification and dependence, along with the other roles sport participation plays in the lives of women. Dr. Lopiano is the CEO and founder of Sports Management Resource Group. She is the former executive director of the women’s Sports Foundation and has participated in twenty-six national championships across four sports in her career as a student-athlete. Dr. Lopiano is a member of the National Sports Hall of Fame, Texas Women’s Hall of Fame, and National Softball Hall of Fame. She spent seventeen years as the director of women’s athletics at the University of Texas.
