SC Gymnastics Exhibition Team Poster, Camden (March 20, 1942)
Description:
A poster advertising Springfield College Gymnastics Exhibition Team, which was performing a two-hour show at 8:15 p.m. on March 20, 1942 at the Convention Hall in Camden, New Jersey. Admission was fifty-five cents for adults and eleven cents for students. The event was hosted by the Victor Athletic Association, a relatively large club that fielded sports teams in Camden’s Industrial League and held special events. All proceeds from this show went to the Naismith National Basketball Memorial, which was originally housed at Springfield College. The back of the poster has an unfinished advertisement for an unrelated event. Under the leadership of Professor Leslie J. Judd, the purpose of the Springfield College Exhibition team was to promote and maintain an interest in gymnastics, the dance, and the artistic phases of physical education in schools, colleges, YMCAs, and recreational centers. The Exhibition Team has appeared before thousands of spectators in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. In 1941, the team appeared before thirty-five-thousand spectators in twenty-five cities. We believe this event was in 1942, because the convention center was destroyed in a fire before March 20 fell on a Friday again, but we do not know the year for certain. Scale is not 1:1 because item was digitized using a Canon EOS Rebel T1i. Original size is listed in the extent field;
