This photograph shows the 1947 Cosmopolitan Club, the original name for Springfield College’s International Students Organization, in Marsh Memorial Library. In the background is “The Joy of Effort,” a bronze sculpture created by R. Tait McKenzie. The members shown are, left to right, [seated] James T. Mao, Tung Wang Situ, Keith Moore, Tewfik Wissa, Dr. Theodore A. Weil (academic advisor), Lloyd G. McDonald, Edward C. Mo, J. Edmund Welch, Luis M. Sevilla, [standing] Corneil S. Balding, Leonard Connor, Menzies, Akira Chiba, Edward R. Giles, Oscar S. Carrillo, George A. Buckmaster, Collins, Henry L. Etheridge, Robert J. Neely, Aldubi, Shig Murao, Piak, and James S. Miyake. During the 1946-1947 academic year, club members represented Australia, China, Egypt, Hawaii, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, South Africa, Palestine, and Panama. Weil was born in Wiljandi, Estonia on March 2, 1893. During World War I, he served in France as a Sargent in the field artillery. Weil worked at American International College from 1932 until 1946, when he began teaching history and international relations at Springfield College. Based on Catalog listings, Weil appears to have left Springfield College 1960.
