This photograph shows the Springfield College baseball team from 1915. The three men in the center of the first row are J. Whalen, W. H. Fountain (captain), and J. F. Miller. In the second row, the men second and third from the left are Walter Campbell and W. A. Lang. The men in the third row are Elmer Berry (coach), W. A. Kindle, H. A. Stine, and Daniel E. Mason (team manager). In 1915, the team went 10-4-0 and was coached by Elmer Berry. Berry coached a total of ten seasons (1915-1917, 1919-1923, 1925-1926) and had an overall all record of 79-62-0 with a .560 winning percentage. They are sitting on the steps of east gymnasium (part of Judd Gymnasia). Judd Gymnasia was the first building erected on the new land purchased for the YMCA Training School, now Springfield College, along Massasoit Lake. Morrissey and Shea’s Corporation completed construction on the building in September of 1894 and it was formally opened on October 26, 1894. The original gymnasium, known today as East Gymnasium, was where James Naismith taught classes and coached the school’s basketball team. However, it is not the gymnasium where basketball was invented.
