Women's Athletic Association Original Constitution, c. 1953
Description:
This document is the original constitution of the Springfield College Women’s Athletic Association (WAA) at Springfield College. There are a total of twelve articles that describe the name, purpose, membership, officer duties, election, meetings, dues, and awards (determined through an elaborate point system). Section 1 of the eighth article (which describes the awards point systems) has corrections made in pencil throughout. The remaining articles discuss tournaments (individual sports, team sports, and conduct), annual functions, sports clubs, and how to make amendments. Springfield College started its women's athletics program in 1938. The college's WAA documents date back to 1953, but it is unclear if the program existed when Women first were admitted to Springfield College in 1951 and what year they wrote this constitution (The document was with materials from 1953). The purpose of the Springfield College Women’s Athletic Association is to promote and conduct an extracurricular sports program for women in accordance with the highest ideals in women’s sports and to promote interest in athletics and good sportsmanship. For information on the Women's Athletic/Recreation Association see: https://springfield.as.atlas-sys.com/agents/corporate_entities/160. There are notes in pencil across the fourth page and on a small part of the seventh page. The entirety of the back of the seventh page is covered in graphite.
