A portrait photograph of Clifford L. Brownell, Ph.D. Clifford L. Brownell was born on November 22, 1895, in Red Creek, New York. Brownell received his B.S., A.M., and Ph.D. degrees from Columbia University. Brownell served as the State Supervising Agent and later Assistant State Director of Health and Physical Education in Connecticut. He then moved to Massachusetts and became the Director of Health and Physical Education for Newton Public Schools. In 1929, he began work at Columbia University. In 1952, Dr. Brownell was appointed as the AAHPER (American Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation) president.
