This is a 16mm film with color and sound. The film is titled "Design for Tomorrow". It was produced and created by Bay State Film Productions and is narrated by Bruce Kern. It is around 23 minutes long. The film explains the process of how a student chooses to go to Springfield College, and explains some of the skills that students who attend Springfield College acquire over their time spent there. The film was created when the college was still called International YMCA College. At this point, the college was specifically focused on physical education, health education, and youth leadership. The film follows the story of a student as he makes the decision to attend Springfield College with narration done by Bruce Kern, and explains some of his great experiences he received while attending the school. The film explains the importance of learning by doing rather than just reading textbooks the entire time, allowing the students to apply practical knowledge. One example of this is that the students who want to be coaches and trainers learn the correct stretching and rehabbing techniques to minimize injuries and the severity of injuries of their players. The film shows some of the great extracurricular activities offered on campus, including swimming, gymnastics, and a newspaper run by the students called the Springfield Student. The students are also shown attending their prom. The film also focuses on the importance of helping students receive placement into their first job after receiving their degree, which is followed by a filming of an actual commencement that occurred at Springfield College. The film ends with Doctor Paul Limbert, the current president at the time of the film, explaining that time did not permit to discuss the graduate program but that Springfield College has a very strong graduate program and is also now allowing women to enter both undergraduate and graduate programs at the college aimed towards leadership and teaching. For more information on Paul M. Limbert, see https://springfield.as.atlas-sys.com/agents/people/597. The film is very similar to two other films with the title “Design for Tomorrow”. One version was dated 1948. The differences with this film is that the title “Design for Tomorrow" is not show and Limbert is not shown speaking at the end of the film like he is here. The 1948 date for this version came from information on the DVD and VHS tape cover. It is not known if this is the actually date that the film was made and whether this version, copy 1, was later with the ending added to the film. It could be that there was damage to the ca. 1948 film that caused this ending to be spliced and the date on the film was wrong. The other film, “Design for Tomorrow – copy 1 (ca. 1950)”, is basically identical with this film. The only difference being the introduction is longer in this film than it is for film 2.; Film Technician notes: “warped/shrunken. perf/audio track damage.”; The film has been cleaned and placed in a new canister. The old canister had a sticker on the either side of it that said, "Audio Visual Center / Springfield College / Springfield, MA 01109 / Title: Design for Tomorrow" It then had a box for "B & W" with an x in it and a box for "Sound" that had an x in it. The sticker listed the film at 30 minutes.
