Description:
A four-page letter from Robert H. Smith Jr. to Ralph L. Cheney, date April 26th, 1919. In this letter, Smith informs Cheney that he is in the Marines serving in Haiti and tells him his experiences while in the country, including recent attacks and battles. He also writes about his process of getting discharged and complains about his campaign in Port au Prince because of the lack of white women, climate, and scarcity of supplies like food. Ralph L. Cheney served as the head of Springfield College’s Secretarial Department from 1907 to 1924. Before taking this position, he worked as a YMCA secretary in Albany and Niagara Falls, New York.
