Bound for Omaha: articles on SC going to NCAA Baseball Tournament in 1951
Description:
Three sections of the Springfield (Massachusetts) Republican newspaper with photographs and articles on the Springfield College Baseball Team going to the NCAA Baseball Championships held in Omaha Nebraska. All are dated June 10, 1951 in pencil written on the sections. This is all on a single page of the Springfield College Sports Scrapbook with articles from Jan. 21, 1951 through Nov. 6, 1951. On the top of the page are a photograph of the members (not the full team) of the Baseball team going to Omaha. It is titled "Bound for Omaha, Neb., and the Title NCAA Tournament and shows the team on bleachers in their uniform and has their names underneath. Underneath this are two articles with the titles "Springfield Squad Off Today for NCAA Baseball Tourney" and Maroon Nine Given Rousing 'Homecoming Day' Farewell" written by Jerome H. Radding. The articles talk about the tournament and who they will play, the teams, and who came out to visit the team to send them off. The Springfield College 1951 Baseball Team was coached by Archie Allen and won 16 and lost 7. They represented the New England District One in the NCAA College World Series. In a two game elimination format, they won their opener against Texas A & M, 5-1, but then lost to Oklahoma University, 7-1, and Tennessee University, 2-0.
