A portrait photograph of Vaughn Seavey Blanchard. Vaughn Seavey Blanchard was born on July 11, 1889 in Franklin, New Hampshire. Blanchard graduated from Bates College in 1912 where he was the Maine intercollegiate champion for three years and won the junior low hurdles national championship in 1911. He then competed at the 1912 Summer Olympics in the 110-meter hurdles and in the exhibition baseball tournament. He studied at the YMCA Training College (Springfield College) from 1912 to 1913. He served as a teacher and coach at various schools from 1913-1919 until he started training troops at Camp Wadsworth during World War I. After the war, temporarily taught at the University of Alabama before returning to Massachusetts and then to Detroit. From 1929 to 1954 Blanchard served as director of the Detroit public schools' Health and Physical Education departments and at one point on the Board of Education in Detroit and received various national awards. Blanchard died on November 26, 1969.
