Patterson played both defense and attack for the college and graduated in 1951. In 2000, Patterson was inducted to the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame as an outstanding player, who was also an outstanding coach or official. At the college, Patterson was a two-time All-New England player. He also spent time coaching lacrosse after graduating, and spent over 20 years coaching at Kenwood (Md.) High School, Niagra University, the Buffalo Lacrosse Club and the Iroquois All-Stars. Patterson was also a 1993 inductee in the US Lacrosse Greater Rochester Chapter Hall of Fame.
