<mods:abstract>A letter from Laurence L. Doggett to Edward W. Ryan written on June 30, 1919. In the letter, Doggett writes that he enclosed a recommendation for Ryan and of the College's involvement in the war. He also mentions the College's outlook for September and asks if Ryan knows of any fine British men that might want to attend the College. Doggett was Springfield College's fourth president. He was also the first full-time president and served in the position from 1896-1936. Under Doggett's leadership, Springfield College expanded its student body and faculty. Doggett also oversaw the building of a new gymnasium, library, swimming pool, and athletics. Doggett was instrumental in developing and implementing the College's Humanics philosophy which still guides the college to this day. He retired in 1936 and remains Springfield College's longest-tenured president. Dr. Laurence L. Doggett died in 1957 at the age of 92. Edward M. Ryan (1878-1970) was born in Stretford, Manchester, England. He was a graduate of the class of 1911 He was known affectionatly as "The Major" by the fellows at the YMCA in Wellington New Zealand where he spent his time before and after his war service. He served in three wars in the British Army, the Boer War, World War I, and World War II. During the First World War he served as a Y.M.C.A. field secretary at Awapuni and Trentham camps in France; and in the Second World War he served as an officer of the Wellington Y.M.C.A., which gave shelter to thousands of troops. He died in 1970.</mods:abstract>
