"The Legitimate Place of Athletics in the YMCA," by Luther Halsey Gulick (1894)
Description:
A manuscript titled "The Legitimate Place of Athletics in the Young Men's Christian Association" written by Luther Halsey Gulick. It appears to have been given or presented at the Massachusetts State Convention in 1894. The 7 page document talks about the purposes of Athletics in the YMCA and how it helps to build an "all-round christian manhood.," the types of pursuits and some of the evils that might be attendent too them due to specialization, and how the revival of the Greek Pentathlon might help to avoid some of these evils. Most of the document appears to be the promotion of the pentathlon and how they might work in the YMCA. The document finishes with suggestions of how other sports (running, swimming, bicycling, etc.) can also be worked into building an all-around aproach to athletics in the YMCA.
