A news paper clipping with the title, "Springfield College Tries the Two 'R's' - Raising and Razing". According to the handwritten note on the bottom it was published on February 26, 1959. The article talks about the tearing down of the Old Student Union or Doggett's House and the construction of the newest dormitory or residence hall, what will eventually be known as Massasoit Hall. Massasoit Hall was completed and opened for residents in September 1959. At the time it was built, the dormitory remained undedicated and simply known as “South Hall” because of its location just south of Alumni Hall. The dormitory was the first of a tri-pod of Resident Halls built between 1955 and 1960. On April 22nd, 1961, the Hall was to be named Dr. Allen Reed Hall, but on June 10th 1961, the college decided that the last dorm in the cultivation of this tri-pod should be named after the College’s founder, and so it was decided that South Hall be named Massasoit Hall, after the lake that it sits on. Massasoit Hall originally functioned as an all-male dormitory, but in 1969 it was the first dormitory to change from a single sex hall to a co-educational dormitory. Separate floors were designated for men and women. Today Massasoit Hall houses freshmen students retaining its new and modern spirit with the many new first years residing in it each fall. Old Student Union/Doggett’s House. In the 1890s, Gulick built a three story, 16 room house on what is now the parking area for Babson Library. Gulick designed the house himself, paying $4,100 for the construction and $200 for the grading of the property following construction. In May of 1900, when he left Springfield College, Gulick offered the house and property to the school for $4,000. Gulick’s offer was turned down and the house was sold to Walter Beebe in 1904. In 1913, the School’s trustees authorized President Laurence Locke Doggett to rent the house from Beebe for $35.00 per month. Because of the extensive repairs needed, an agreement was reached with Walter Beebe for the College to purchase the property for $5,000. President Doggett resided in the house from 1914 through 1936, when he retired. In 1947 the building was renovated for use as the Student Union. It remained a Student Union until the completion of the Beveridge Center in 1959.
