  <mods:abstract>This photograph shows Springfield College faculty member Dr. John Brainerd gardening. In the photograph, Dr. Brainerd is wearing a pair of glasses, and he is holding a flower in his hands and checking on it. The back of the photograph has a label on it, which says "Dr. John W. Brainerd Professor of Biology &amp; Conservation Springfield College.". Dr. John Brainerd was a professor and head of the Biology Department at Springfield College. He specialized in ecological botany and conservation education, and he was active in many fields of conservation. He earned his PhD at Harvard University and was with the U.S. Forest Service and the U.S. Wildlife Service before coming to SC. He retired in 1980.</mods:abstract>
