  <mods:abstract>McGill University published “Before the Dream Team: An Influence Other than Preaching” in the Fall 1992 edition of the McGill News. This is photocopy of the article. It contains a letter written by James A. Naismith to William G. Morgan on August 14, 1928. The letter was found in the archives of the “Recorder and Times” (Brockville, Canada) by managing editor Perry Beverley. In the letter, Naismith describes his childhood and the key influences that lead to the invention of basketball. The letter’s biographical information ends with his accepting an instructor position at the International YMCA College, now known as Springfield College. A photograph on the final page shows James Naismith holding a peach basket and his first wife, Maude E. Sherman, holding a ball in 1928.
