<mods:abstract>This is a commencement address delivered by Julius Erving on May 19, 1991. The address was delivered at the Springfield College commencement ceremony where Erving received an honorary Doctor of Humanics degree. In his address, Erving talked about winning. Julius Winfield Erving II (born February 22, 1950), commonly known by the nickname Dr. J, is an American retired basketball player. Erving helped legitimize the American Basketball Association (ABA) and was the best-known player in that league when it merged with the National Basketball Association (NBA) after the 1975–76 season. Erving was inducted in 1993 into the Basketball Hall of Fame and was also named to the NBA's 50th Anniversary All-Time team. Erving earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst through the University Without Walls program in creative leadership and administration in 1986. He also holds an honorary doctorate from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Erving received an honorary degree of Doctor of Humanics from Springfield College and delivered a commencement address at SC's 105th commencement ceremony in 1991.</mods:abstract>
