- Description:
-
These are two prints of a sketch of YMCA worker done by Montagu Modder in 1917. The sketch is of a YMCA worker slumped in an easy chair. He is wearing rumbled suit, his hat is on the floor upside down beside the chair, and in his left hand he is still holding his cane. In the first print there is a paragraph written at the bottom. The paragraph reads, "The obviously monsoon-struck individual, finding the easy chair so hard, should remember that the YMCA offers an opportunity which will lift him from his pitiable position. Work among soldiers in the hospitals, at the Cooperage Hut, in the Literary and Debating Societies, Musical and Religious meetings - all these will soon effect a cure and result in the smile that stays! There is always something doing at the YMCA!" The second print has some handwriting on the back, but this was unable to be deciphered by the technician during digitization. Montagu Frank Modder (1891-1958) was a Visiting Professor of English at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania for the 1957-1958 academic year, was born on November 24, 1891 in Colombo, Ceylon (Sri Lanka) where his father served as a Chief Justice for the British Government. Modder received his undergraduate education from the Royal College in Ceylon and Springfield College in Massachusetts. In the midst of his studies also served with the British armed forces in the First World War. Modder went on to receive advanced degrees from Clark University (M.A.) and the University of Michigan (Ph.D.), and pursued additional graduate studies at Yale University and at Cambridge and Oxford in England. He was known for his many political cartoons, which were prominently featured in The Christian Science Monitor, The Milwaukee Journal, The Capital Times (Madison, WI), The Daily News (Beloit, WI), and The Sentinel (Carlisle, PA), among other newspapers and magazines.
