This photograph shows five tennis courts that use to be located on the Springfield College campus, with students playing on three of the tennis courts. Originally they were part of the Pratt Field complex of fields, etc. Across the street from the courts are Springfield's Gulick Hall and Lakeside Hall. These tennis courts were reconstructed and became the Appleton tennis courts. The tennis courts are now used for both the Springfield men and women's tennis teams as well as the tennis courses offered at the college. The tennis courts were named after Leirion H. Appleton, who donated to the school in memory of her husband Edward A. Appleton, former President of the Corporation of Springfield. Mrs. Appleton had remained an anonymous benefactress to Springfield College for over a decade. The picture is not dated, but is assumed to have taken between 1960 and 2000.
