Ray Chinn, Raymond Brown, & James O'Brien (ca. 1950)
Description:
A marketing mock up of a cutout of a photograph of Ray Chinn, Raymond Brown, and James O'Brien, three Springfield College Gymnasts, performing a triple balance move. James O'Brien is on the ground support the other Gymnasts with his legs, Raymond Brown is in the middle with his shoulders balanced on the feet of the other two gymnasts, and Ray Chinn is standing on O'Brien's feet, holding onto Brown's legs. The photo is thought to have been taken around 1950 by Geo Hayles. The cut-out of the men is glued onto cardboard and there are scratched out notes written on the cardboard. It is believed this was used in the production of a pamphlet or magazine or other college publication by the college's marketing and communication department. The history of gymnastics at Springfield College stretches nearly as far back as the school’s founding in 1885. Leslie Judd, widely considered a father of modern gymnastics, was the team’s first coach. Dr. James Naismith, the creator of basketball, was an early member of the team. The Exhibition Team has appeared before thousands of spectators in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. In fact, in 1941 the team appeared before thirty-five-thousand spectators in twenty-five cities.
