<mods:abstract>A newspaper clipping published on April 14, 1916. It includes a photograph of 13 uniformed male officers posing in a group shot, including Springfield College alumni Charles A. Palmer. Hand written on the photograph are indicators of the location of Palmer in the photograph. The article titled "The 5th Pioneers leave for Valcartier Camp From Windsor Street Station Tonight" talks about the 5th Pioneers scheduled leave for the Valcartier Camp in the night. Charles A. Palmer grew up in Ottawa, Ontario, and graduated from the Silver Bay Summer School in 1909. He served as the physical director and then general secretary for the St. Johnsbury YMCA (Vermont). Palmer then traveled back to Canada, where he attended the Quebec Provisional Military School. After graduating with a captain's commission, he served as captain and adjutant to the Highland Cadet Battalion. Palmer graduated from Springfield College in 1916, before he was called to fight with the 5th Pioneers, Overseas Battalion. During the war, he was promoted to captain. After the war, Palmer taught physical education and coached at Stadium High School in Tacoma, Washington. His swimming team and tennis team both won several state championships. During this time, he also coached the Tacoma YMCA team on to win several Pacific Northwest championships. He died on June 25, 1945. This item was original held loose within a bound book titled “War-Work Courses in Great War, 1917-1918 Incomplete.” This volume was unbound and its contents foldered in the original order, which is chronological. The binding string was cut and the glue was removed with a razor blade. The edges are intact and the placement of stitches are visible. Each page or booklet was individually lifted out of the binding and placed in their own folder or a folder with like materials. Oversized materials were removed and placed in the oversized materials collection.</mods:abstract>
