Letter from Laurence L. Doggett to Louis F. Laun, (February 6, 919)
Description:
A letter from Laurence L. Doggett to Louis F. Laun written on February 6th, 1919. In the letter, Doggett informs Laun that because of a reduction in spending he is not aware of any positions at the College. Doggett says he will forward Laun's letter to Mr. Berry who might know more about a position. Doggett was Springfield College's fourth president. He was also the first full-time president and served in the position from 1896-1936. Under Doggett's leadership, Springfield College expanded its student body and faculty. Doggett also oversaw the building of a new gymnasium, library, swimming pool, and athletics. Doggett was instrumental in developing and implementing the College's Humanics philosophy which still guides the college to this day. He retired in 1936 and remains Springfield College's longest-tenured president. Dr. Laurence L. Doggett died in 1957 at the age of 92. Louis F. Laun graduated in 1915 from the International YMCA College, now known as Springfield College. Laun was raised in Waterville, Connecticut. While at Springfield College, he was a member of the International Literary Society and the Student Senate.
