"Will get Honorary Degrees at Springfield College" (May 1940)
Description:
A newspaper article on who is being given honorary degrees at Springfield College in May 1940 (the exact date is handwritten but illegible on the top right hand corner). The article is titled "Avery Brundage, President of A.A. U., to get Honorary Degree at local college." The article also lists Elisha A. King and Judson P. Freeman as getting honorary degrees. Arthur Morgan will give the address. The article gives descriptions of careers and talks about the commencement exercises that will take place on June 9th. The Board of Trustees of Springfield College voted on March 30, 2021 to revoke the honorary degree of Master of Physical Education awarded to Mr. Avery Brundage by the College in 1940. The College’s Honorary Degree Committee, comprised of the Provost, Deans, a faculty representative, and a student representative, investigated Springfield College community complaints regarding Brundage’s statements issued/made since the degree was awarded and recommended to the Board of Trustees that it be revoked given the antisemitic, racist, and sexist behavior in words and actions Brundage displayed finding that his conduct was inconsistent with the values of Springfield College.
