  <mods:abstract>A photograph of the 1929 men's swimming and diving team at Springfield College. The team was coached by John Louis Rothacher and led by team captain Andrew Naismith Brown. The team members include 1st row [L to R]: Charles F. Hall, Davis I. Humphrey, and Carl F. Fischer; 2nd row [L to R]: Charles F. Weckworth, Joseph C. Clarke, Andrew N. Brown, Norman C. Ford, and George A. Springer; 3rd row [L to R]: Orville H. Emmons, John H. Beukema, Elton A. Rosen, Irvin E. Erb, Candido C. Bartolome, and John L. Rothacher; 4th row [L to R]: Donald M. Wilson, William St. Marie, Willard E. Zweidinger, Robert Nelson Jr., Karl P. Hartman, Raymond B. Walker, and David E. Coe. Although Rothacher loved swimming as a sport, he considered the activity to be an excellent conditioner for athletes interested in football and track. Nevertheless, his teams compiled successful records. During his seven seasons as coach, Springfield captured two New England Cham pionships. Rothacher-coached teams won the New England title the first year Springfield joined the league, 1928. Springfield amassed a record of 42 victories and 12 losses in dual meets under Rothacher.</mods:abstract>
