<mods:abstract>A copy of an untitled poem by Susan North about running. There are two dates on the document, with one being April 1, 1976. The other date the month is not able to be made out. Susan North-Patterson graduated Springfield College in 1978. While at Springfield College, North-Patterson was not only an exceptional athlete, but also a pioneer for women's athletics, as she played an intricate role in starting the women's track and field program on Alden Street in 1977. One of the first All-America honorees in Springfield College women's track & field history, North-Patterson took third in the mile at the 1978 AIAW Track & Field Championships and would establish program records in the mile, 1500, 3000, and two mile. The Bermuda National Track & Field All-Comers record holder in the 1500 in 1977, she later raced in the 1981 Sports Festival for the East Team as part of the United States Olympic Committee Development Program, completing the marathon in 3:19. Her passion for running continued and has been a leader in her community after founding the Vermilion Road Warriors Running Club in 1988. She spent time as the Director of Athletics at Simon's Rock of Bard College in Great Barrington, Mass. from 1978-1981, and since 2001, has been a teacher in the Lorain City Schools in Ohio, teaching physical education, science, elementary education, and Success For All reading program. Her commitment to making a difference in the lives of her students is evidenced by her work as an assistant coordinator for "Fuel-Up, Play 60" an exercise and nutritional program through the NFL, as well as her continued efforts in finding proper footwear for physical activity for youth in the area. This photograph was supplied from various sources to the Athletic Department for use in the 2019 Athletic Hall of Fame inductions. Only digital files were supplied. These files were printed and a physical version was placed in the photo. No original print exists in the collection at the time that this file was uploaded into the digital collections.;</mods:abstract>
