  <mods:abstract>This is a copy of a newspaper article titled, History of Basketball, by James Naismith from April of 1896. The article comes out the YMCA publication, the Young Men's Era's April 1896 publication, page 253 and 254. This article first discusses gymnastics and the benefits of physical activity. The International YMCA Training School, now Springfield College, determined that physical activity should be mandated to the students on the following conditions: the activity is interesting, easy to learn, indoors in a gymnasium, free from roughness, applicable to a large or small group, all-round development. This document discusses the school settling on including a ball and basket and excluding any rough play. The rules were written in advance and the essence of the game as a whole is captured in this article. This article is two pages and it is a copy of the original.
