This is a 14 page manuscript titled, "Robert J. Roberts". It was written by Carlos Duella Clapp, a Springfield College (known as the International YMCA Training School at the time) student in 1898. There is biographical information on Robert J. Roberts within the manuscript. The document was Clapp's graduation thesis. According to the notes on the first page, the document was "unsatisfactory" and may never have been finished and submitted to the school as the document is not within the College's thesis collection. The document was within a group of theses that were donated to the college by Luther Halsey Gulick. Robert Jeffries Roberts was born in Boston, June 29, 1849. Roberts is attributed to have coined the phrase "body building" and did extensive work developing exercise using dumb bells. Beginning in August, 1875, Roberts started his career as instructor of physical education at the Boston YMCA and remained there for twelve years. In 1887 he served as physical instructor at the (School for Christian Workers, now Springfield College) Springfield campus, but resigned after two years. -- Information retrieved from the "sketch of Mr. Roberts' life" written by Luther Gulick found in the "Home Dumb Bell Drill" by Robert J.
