Description:
A series of footage created by Channel 22 WWLP Television station in Springfield Massachusetts. Some has sound, some does not. The footage runs about 5 minutes long. There are two main events featured, the return of the Springfield College Men's Basketball Team from their World Tour in 1965 and the dedication of Linkletter Natatorium in 1967. The film starts off with the Men's Basketball Team getting off the bus and being greeted by friends and family. There is no sound in the section and runs for the first 44 seconds. Then there is an interview with Springfield College head coach and Athletic Director, Edward S. Steitz. The interview talks about their reception overseas, the Pakistani situation, and the impact on the students. It runs until about 2 minutes and 55 seconds. This followed by some silent footage of the construction of Linkletter, including the fitting of the first two main beams by two workmen who climbed up the curved beams (runs until about 3 minutes and 40 seconds), and then footage of the dedication, including people outside, Art Linkletter speaking (no sound), and finally parts of the diving show. The Springfield College men’s basketball team was selected to embark on a 62-day, around-the-world goodwill tour sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. The individuals on the trip included Head coach Ed Steitz, trainer-manager Tony Scolnick, and public information director George Wood, along with 10 varsity players: Ralph Arietta, Larry Buell, Jim Champlin, Ben Davis, Leon Drury, Rick Janes, Bill Scanlon, Reed Schultz, Bob Sisson, and Paul Wagner. The tour was designed to teach fundamentals of the game to youth, and play demonstration games, mostly against local competition. The tour included 111 clinics conducted by the team, which included 80,000 people in attendance. The team also played 26 games, winning all of them, in front a crowd of 65,000 fans. It was Arthur Gordon Linkletter, also known as Art Linkletter, who suggested that the college build a new swimming and diving facility. Art Linkletter was the famed entertainer best known for his TV series "House Party" that ran on. There are a group of letters and some attached scripts with this video. The letters involve the sending of this video in December 10, 1982 and the response of the college to their receipt. The scripts are for the Steitz interview and 1965 Basketball footage and from Linkletter Natatorium text used in the news reports. They have been kept with the video at this time; The original 16mm film and a copy made on a VHS tape were put into this collection simply because it was the first collection processed;
