  <mods:abstract>This photograph shows a female freshman wearing a beanie, reading an "Off to College" magazine and smiling. The student is wearing a name tag, but things written on the tag are unidentifiable. She is wearing a Springfield College class of 1982 beanie, which means that she would graduate in 1982 and the photograph was taken when she was a freshman. The cover of the magazine says "1978 edition", which also indicates that the photograph was taken in 1978. The building behind her is Babson Library. In a tradition that started in the early 1920s and continues to today, entering students to Springfield College wear beanies when they first arrive. Originally students were required to wear their beanies all year, only to be removed on Stepping Up Day in the spring when they officially moved up from freshman status. Today wearing a beanie is no longer required, though over 90 percent of all entering freshman still elect to wear the beanie and continue the tradition.</mods:abstract>
