A picture postcard depicting students working on the grounds at the International YMCA College (now Springfield College). Some of the men are holding shovels and digging a trench. Dr. Seerley is directing the work. Dr. Frank N. Seerley (class of 1890), was an alumnus and faculty member of Springfield College, as well as the Head of the Department of Hygiene at the YMCA headquarters in France. Among many other accomplishments, he earned his M.D. from the University of Vermont, taught animal mechanics, physiology and hygiene, and served as Dean at Springfield. “An innovator, an exponent of the early academic foundations of Springfield College, Dr. Seerley was employed in 1890 as a teacher of physiology and psychology, a teaching position which he was to continue, with the exception of two years --- one in 1903 when he went to the University of Paris for a year's study in psychology, and in 1918 during the World War when he went overseas to lecture to the troops --- until his retirement in 1933. During this forty-three year period Dr. Seerley made important contributions to the developing of the teaching of psychology at Springfield College. Frank N. Seerley was born on November 21, 1859, in the town of South English, Iowa. His early life was spent on his father's farm. He entered the University of Iowa in the class of 1882, but a sunstroke caused his withdrawal in 1880. Eleven years later he received his M.D. by his continued work at the University of Vermont, the degree being granted j'as of 1882.' The sunstroke altered the course of Seerley's life, for in 1881, he entered the jewelry business. Two years later he became the secretary of the Iowa City Y.M.C.A. In that same year he married Margret [sic] G. Holmes of Iowa City.
