A photograph showing a group of soldiers in a tent at Camp Hamilton in Lexington Kentucky, ca. 1898. Many of the men pictured are either standing or sitting at tables. Written on the back of the photograph is, "Interior Y.M.C.A. Tent with solders at tables & J. Maguire & J.H. Noris at rear & John Best singer at organ". Like many southern military structures, Camp Hamilton was erected by early settlers for their protection. During the Spanish American War and its operation, it housed the Signal Corps, Second Division, the First Territorial, the Twelfth New York, Third Missouri, and Tenth Immunes. However, all vestige of the camp has now disappeared. The exact location Camp Hamilton is not positively known today, but reference is made to them in State histories, State papers, etc.
