A news article from the Springfield Republican newspaper titled, "An American Japanese" published on Feb. 12, 1943. The article was on Fred Hoshiyama, class of 1944, of Springfield College (back then known as the International YMCA College). The article includes a photograph of Fred Hoshiyama, sitting at a desk. Fred Y. Hoshiyama lived his entire life in association with the YMCA. In 1942, he was interred at the Government Internment Camp in Utah, where he helped to create YMCA-based programs to help address the social, educational, and recreational needs of the Japanese-Americans held in the internment camp. An offer to study at Springfield College provided Hoshiyama with an early release from the internment camp. In 1971, he was appointed associate staff of the national program and Urban Development Division. He developed National Youth Program Using Mini-Bikes (NYPUM), a program that eventually engaged 250,000 high-risk youth in productive activities.
