<mods:abstract>This is a video which was originally formatted as a VHS tape. The video takes a look at the dorm rooms of Abbey-Appleton and Gulick Halls' located on the campus at Springfield College. The video focuses on two students named Ashley and Amy who take the viewer on a tour of their dorm rooms. The two young women talk about their dormitories and why they like them as the camera moves around the room showing their beds, desks, photographs hanging from the wall, and any other features of their rooms. The video begins with Ashley, whose room is in Abbey-Appleton Hall, and then moves to Amy, whose room is in Gulick Hall. Each girl's room is shown for about three minutes, with a total length of 6 minutes and 21 seconds for the film. On April 24th, 1934 Springfield College accepted a gift from Mrs. Emily F. Abbey Gill to erect a women’s dormitory, in anticipation of Springfield College accepting undergraduate women into the college. The college at the time accepted a few women in special undergraduate and graduate programs. The college continued to increase the number of women enrolled as undergraduate and graduate students, so in 1949 Mrs. Emily F. Abbey Gill donated a further $150,000 to finance the much needed women’s residency. Finally, on June 10th, 1950, Springfield College voted to inaugurate a regular undergraduate program for women, officially ending its status as an all men's school since its founding in 1885. On July 20th, 1950 the ground breaking ceremony was held for the new dormitory. Emily F. Abbey Gill served as a member of the college corporation, but died on April 24th, 1950. After her death, the college suggested that the new dormitory be named Abbey Hall in honor of her dream of a women’s program at Springfield. The corner stone was laid on January 18th 1951 and in September of that year Abbey Hall was ready for occupancy. The formal dedication took place on May 10th, 1952, after the building was fully furnished and the interior decoration was completed. Today Abbey Hall is part of Abbey-Appleton Halls (added in 1953), a co-educational dormitory. Construction on Gulick Hall began in the summer of 1968 and was completed in September of 1969. The dedication was held at the conclusion of the school year on May 29th, 1970. The dormitory was named for Dr. Luther Halsey Gulick who served as the college’s first physical training department director and is credited with creating Springfield College’s official seal, the inverted triangle, as well as the college’s Humanics philosophy of educating the whole person in “spirit, mind and body”. Gulick Hall was the first dorm to break the tradition of males and females having completely separate dorm buildings. Though Massasoit was the first dormitory to change from a single-sex dorm to a co-ed dorm in 1969, Gulick was the first dormitory built with the intention to house both men and women. Gulick had sections designated for males and females, explaining the complicated interior structure in which there are different letter/floor names, and different areas which are often surprisingly hard to get to. Today, Gulick Hall houses just under 300 first-year students, almost half the freshmen class. Video Technician Notes: "Asset begins immediately. Audio is on both channels, but is unbalanced and from camera. Picture is clear. Plays well."</mods:abstract>
