  <mods:abstract>A portrait photograph of Edward C. Schneider. Edward Christian Schneider was born in Wapello, Iowa in August 1874. He was one of physical education's most eminent scientists, especially in the field of physiology. He received his B.S. from Tabor College and his Ph.D. in philosophy from Yale University. He also earned multiple honorary degrees including one from Springfield College in 1923. Schneider began his professional life as a professor of chemistry, biology, and physiology at various schools from 1897-1944. During this time, he held the position of Captain and Major of the Sanitary Corps from 1917-1919. He also was the Director of Physiology at the School of Aviation Medicine in New York (1919-1924). He received multiple honors in his lifetime, including the Honor Award of the American Association for Health, Physical Education, and Recreation in 1931, the John Jeffries Award for Medical Research in Aeronautical Science, and was invited to be a member of the American Academy of Physical Education.</mods:abstract>
