  <mods:abstract>According to the backside of the drawing, this pencil sketch shows the old abattoir, or slaughterhouse, on the site of the present practice field just west of the Pratt Field grand stand. The school purchased the land that the slaughterhouse was located on from William R. Purple, a wholesale meat dealer. Purple had reserved the slaughterhouse for his work, but the house became offensive to the surrounding people and began to fall apart. Eventually, decades later, the building was torn down and the bricks were buried beneath the parking lot to the rear of Marsh Memorial Library. The drawing is signed G. S. Payne and dated June 20, 1885. This is presumably the artist as well the date the sketch was created.
