<mods:abstract>The video which was originally a VHS tape was taken during a Channel 22 news program. The video begins by introducing Reeds Landing through a commercial, which is a retirement home located on Wilbraham Avenue in Springfield. The beginning of the video shows the residents completing numerous activities and remaining fit. Mikki Viereck, the news anchor of Channel 22, is then introduced at the 45 second mark as she provides an interview with two actual current residents of Reeds Landing and Matt Leahey, who is the executive director. Leahey talks about the great opportunities his home provides, referring to it as a life care community rather than a retirement community. Leahey explains how the residents pay a reasonable fee per month that provides them with housing and health care benefits, and how his organization is not for profit. Randy Betsher, one of the two residents, explains how he used to be an accountant and that the costs of living at the life care community are about the same as the costs Betsher would face to live on his own. The second resident, Betty Sexton, also seems to be a huge supporter of the community, highlighting the numerous activities she can complete here. Sexton believes that the key to living longer is not diet but rather staying active and enjoying life, and she believes that Reed's Landing offers these things through their transportation benefit and constant commitment to keep people involved. Leahey also explains how the business has a great relationship with the community, specifically Springfield College. The two have a mutually beneficial relationship as Springfield College often runs activities for the life care home while also providing interns and students who work at Reeds Landing. Overall, Reeds Landing seems like a tremendously well-run company that takes great care of its older, retired, residents. Reeds Landing, or Loomis Lakeside at Reeds Landing, is continuing care retirement community (CCRC) built on land originally belonging to Springfield College’s East Campus. Originally, Bay State Health Systems had the lease for the 23.6 acres of East Campus needed for its construction, but the community is now owned and operated by Loomis Communities. The original lease was approved in January, 1990, by the Board of Trustees as a 75 year lease of the property. According to President Falcone, the lease would provide “income in support of the Springfield College mission.” The Reeds Landing Retirement Community consists of 120 independent living apartments, 56 assisted living apartments and a 42 bed skilled nursing center. Its construction and eventual opening in 1991 was fraught with controversy on the Springfield College campus. Program begins with commercial, and transitions to interview. Recording of live tv. Audio on both channels balanced and consistent. Video looks great.</mods:abstract>
