According to reports, Gaston was a reserved and very courteous man who never boasted of a "beautiful war," as it was then called. He took part in the first major French air raid on Germany, in response to the use of asphyxiant gases by the Germans in Ypres. On May 27, 1915, with his squadron, he took part in the first long-range bombing of the history of aviation (400 km/248.5 mi, 6 hours flight).
