  <mods:abstract>A newspaper article titled, "A Critic by Nature" written by Laurie Bobskill. It was published by the Springfield Daily News and was published on June 6, 1980. The article talks about the retirement of Springfield College prof. John Brainerd after 31 years of teaching. The article gives biographical information, quotes, and discusses his plans for the future. There is a photograph of him packing his books away. Dr. John Brainerd was a professor and head of the Biology Department at Springfield College. He specialized in ecological botany and conservation education, and he was active in many fields of conservation. He earned his PhD at Harvard University and was with the U.S. Forest Service and the U.S. Wildlife Service before coming to SC. He retired in 1980.</mods:abstract>
